Does RTM bill insurance?

  • Under 65 - pay at time of service (PATOS); superbill provided on request for you to submit to your private insurance

  • Medicare primary (we will bill Medicare), if you do not have a supplemental insurance you will receive a bill for a small co-pay after Medicare reimburses.

  • Kaiser-Medicare (we will bill Kaiser Medicare, they will deny and you will be billed — see Booking/Fees for Self-Pay fees)

  • United Health Care PPO (there will be an additional co-pay with this insurance as it only offers a partial reimbursement)

YOU CANNOT BE ACCEPTED as a patient if you have Medicare Advantage (like SCAN. United Health Care HMO, Sutter Medicare etc.), or if Medicare is secondary insurance for you. This is a complicated issue that many patients who fall into this category have a hard time understanding. Simply put, Kathleen is a participatory Medicare provider and cannot accept payment at time of service from Medicare (whether straight Medicare or privatized Medicare insurance) patients. She bills the insurance and then receives payment. Straight Medicare reimburses promptly unless there is an issue with an unmet deductible. She can bill patients once Medicare (straight or advantage) has denied the payment (again rare with straight Medicare), however the problem with the privatized medicare insurance (medicare advantage) is that they typically do not follow through with the denial requiring a lot of time and energy to hunt down the denial paperwork so that Kathleen can receive payment from the patient. This is why Kathleen does not accept privatized Medicare insurance.
